The Bim
Mountain Story
How it
all started
Kerbey Motors International Transport started
in March 2003, but in fact, the family company name has actually been
around for over 60 years.
Kerbey Motors first began life thanks to my dad,
Albert Mountain who had a yard in Kerbey Street, Poplar, London - buying and selling second hand trucks. After the war, the London
council put a compulsory purchase order on the Kerbey Street yard and
bought it. As a result, with the proceeds from the sale, my Father
bought a yard with a large old house, on the A127 at Hornchurch
in Essex. This was where I grew up eventually working alongside my
Father.
Later the business moved to Chelmsford in
Essex where my job was to dismantle and sometimes re-spray the
second hand trucks and mobile cranes, I would also travel the
country looking for good stock. Unfortunately, my dad sadly died
suddenly in 1975 at the age of 62. I then sold all the stock and
closed down the business as my Mother wished.
I then got a job with Ford Motor Company as a
Prototype truck test driver for 3 years. Following on from that came a spell working for ‘Heavyhaul,
a transport company based in Chelmsford as a transport manager /
driver, then later for another local company selling truck and
agricultural tyres and managing a scrap yard.
I wanted to be boss!
At the age of 29 I wanted be become my own
boss and I started a small business buying and selling vehicles. I used my Dad’s old company name of ‘Kerbey Motors’, for
quite a few years, buying mainly vans from auctions, re-spraying
and refurbishing them to a very high standard. Much of the time selling them at
auction and mostly to the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey). I also bought a new
slidebed transporter body from Boniface Engineering, in Thetford,
which I used for transporting the vans.
I became friendly with Mike Boniface who later
persuaded me to go and work for him on a self employed basis
managing all the used recovery vehicle sales at his Thetford depot.
I did this until mid 2002.
Onwards and Upwards!
Still with connections to the recovery
industry, I then decided in March 2003 to start an international
haulage company still named Kerbey Motors International Transport.
After relocating to Aberdeen, we mainly subcontract to
a very well respected specialist road transportcompany, Grampian
Continental, who are also based in Aberdeen, Scotland, predominantly serving the oil and gas industry.
Starting with 2 used Scania 113 Toplines, our fleet is now currently boasting 8 x Topline V8 Scania’s consisting of 1 x 450 bhp 143 Scania,
1 x 530bhp 4 series Scania,
2 x 580 bhp 4 series Scanias, and 4 x 580 R Series Scania’s and
one 2007 Ford Transit van.
Hopefully the company will grow with the help
of the professional team I employ, and who knows - one day Kerbey maybe as big as
Eddie Stobart! |
